CCI Joins Sustainable Textile Partnership in Berlin
Cotton Council International (CCI) was one of the first 30 private sector partners to join the “Partnership for Sustainability” initiated by German Federal Development Minister Dr. Gerd Mueller. The partnership aims to achieve concrete improvements in social and environmental standards in the textile and garment industry. CCI will advocate for the recognition of the United States’ responsible cotton production practices.
"Together we will succeed in bringing about tangible improvements in the working and living conditions of the people who make our clothes under conditions that are sometimes completely unacceptable,” Mueller said. “Consumers have a right to expect that together we will bring about improvements in this regard, and that they will get greater transparency for their purchasing decisions.”
Since the cotton production sector, including setting ecological and social standards, is a key part of the textile partnership's action plan, CCI became a signed member to monitor and participate in the newly established working groups. The United States is the largest global cotton exporter, and U.S. cotton is processed in countries that export textiles and apparel to Germany and the EU in large quantities.
